Eliminating Dust Mites: Your Health Could Depend On It
Although most people are not bothered by them, eliminating dust mites is something that everyone should be interested in. Dust mites live in the dander and skin cells that humans and animals shed on a daily basis. Many people are allergic to their feces, making dust mite prevention highly important. Learning how to protect yourself from dust mites can help you lead a healthier and cleaner life, and a good place to start is with a dust mite mattress cover.
Dust mites are prone to collect in places where there is high traffic of people and pets. These areas include the couch, the bed and pillows. Wherever dead skin cells shed, dust mites are likely to live, enjoying the waste as nutrition. If the thought of tens of thousands of little bugs in your bed makes your skin crawl, do not fear. There is something that you can do to start eliminating dust mites! In fact, there are several actions that you can take to help fight dust mite allergies and the other symptoms of dust mites that some people may have.
A great place to start is in the bedroom. Because we spend so much time asleep in bed, dust mites tend to gather in mattresses. This can cause allergy and asthma sufferers a lot of grief as they lay down for bed. Luckily there are dust mite mattress covers that can help protect your resting place from the nasty little bugs. These covers act as a guard that keeps your mattress free of the dander that mites are attracted to. The dust mite mattress covers are usually made of very dense cotton or a light plastic material that prevents dust mites from entering the mattress. The dust mite cover does not usually interfere with the comfort of the bed and can save you a lot of hassle and cleaning.
Some other great dust mite prevention products include dust mite pillow covers. Just as with the dust mite mattress pad, pillow covers create a thin barrier between the actual pillow and the dust mites, giving you a safe and clean place to rest your head. These same great covers are available for couch cushions and armchair pillows as well.
Basically, the best thing to do for getting rid of dust mites is regularly cleaning any area that is high traffic in the home. Vacuuming and sweeping on a weekly basis can help with eliminating dust mites as can washing your bed linens at least once every two weeks. If you suffer from allergies, particularly dust mite allergies, you may want to clean a little more frequently and be sure to invest in dust mite mattress covers and other protective products. Prevention is key and maintaining a clean living space is the best solution to eliminating dust mites.
WHAT ARE YOU SLEEPING WITH?
What Lives in Your Mattress?
You lose up to 2 pints of body moisture every night, creating a perfect breeding ground in your mattress for bacteria and dust mites. The dust mite is found in every home, particularly in bedding, mattresses and sheets where they thrive in large numbers. They eat microscopic flakes of human skin which we shed every night during our sleep.
Your mattress can't be washed, and, if unprotected, its inhabitants and dust can cause various allergies such as asthma, runny nose, watery eyes, morning congestion, eczema and hay fever.
The Root Cause of Allergies
A speck of dust may contain fabric fibers, human skin scales, animal dander, insect parts, bacteria, moulds, pollens and other organic and synthetic materials. A person may be allergic to one or more of these substances.
Of the many components of house dust, microscopic creatures called house dust mites cause the most trouble. They feed on skin scales and dander shed by humans and are proving to be the major allergen in house dust.
Most recent studies show that as much as 30% of the population are allergic and 80% of allergic asthmatics had a positive skin test to mites.
People become allergic to proteins in mites and mite feces, each mite producing 10-20 waste particles per day. The proteins are so light that they float in the air when disturbed, releasing large amounts of mite proteins, causing some people to have an allergic reaction.
Mites are members of the arachnid family (related to ticks and spiders) and cannot be seen without a microscope. They are hardy and thrive in warm, humid conditions, surviving and multiplying best when relative humidity is 75-80% and the temperature is 68°F or more. The life cycle from egg to adult is 30 days and their numbers reach a peak in mid summer. They love bedding and survive vacuuming because they burrow deep in the bed and pillow fibers and are equipped with sucking, sticking pads on their feet.
